Is Howard or NYU worth the money for an undergraduate degree?
I’m a high school senior trying to decide between Howard and NYU, and the cost difference is really stressing me out. Both schools seem like great options, but I keep hearing that the “worth it” part depends a lot on career goals and financial aid.
I want to understand whether either school is generally considered a good value for undergrad compared with what you can get out of the degree.

The biggest practical tradeoff is cost versus network reach. NYU can open doors through its location in New York City, deep employer connections, and broad name recognition, but it is often one of the more expensive undergraduate options. Howard usually offers a much better value if your aid makes it significantly cheaper, especially because it has a powerful alumni network, strong outcomes in fields like business, communications, politics, and health professions, and a distinctive HBCU community that carries real professional advantages.
In raw return-on-investment terms, Howard is often easier to justify financially for undergrad if the price gap is large. Taking on heavy debt for NYU can be hard to defend unless you are getting strong aid, your family can comfortably afford it, or you have a very specific reason to need what NYU offers. That reason might be direct access to industries centered in New York, such as finance, media, entertainment, fashion, or certain arts paths where internships during the school year matter a lot.
Howard’s value is not just that it costs less in many cases. Its alumni base is notably loyal and influential, particularly in Black professional communities, government, law, medicine, education, and entrepreneurship. For many students, that network is not a side benefit but one of the main assets of the degree.
NYU can be worth it, but mostly when the numbers are manageable. For undergraduate study, the school’s strongest practical advantage is access: internships, city-based recruiting, and exposure to major employers while you are still in school. If that translates into opportunities you know you will use aggressively, the premium can make sense.
If you are comparing them as pure undergraduate value, Howard is more often the smarter financial bet unless NYU comes close in net cost.
