Is University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign or Columbia better for computer science?

For computer science specifically, UIUC is usually viewed as at least on par with Columbia, and many students and employers would put UIUC ahead in pure CS reputation. UIUC has one of the most established and widely recognized CS departments in the country, a very deep course catalog, major research strength, and especially strong recruiting in software, systems, AI, and theory. Columbia is absolutely respected, but its broader prestige comes more from the university as a whole than from clearly surpassing UIUC in computer science.

UIUC tends to make the most sense for the student who wants a campus where CS is a huge institutional strength and a major part of the school’s identity. Its program is large, prominent, and heavily built out, which usually means more specialized classes, more faculty across subfields, and a very strong pipeline into tech companies and grad study. In conversations about undergraduate CS, UIUC comes up constantly because the department has had that reputation for a long time.

Columbia fits the student who wants excellent CS within a smaller Ivy-style environment and cares a lot about being in New York City. That can be especially appealing for someone interested in startups, quantitative finance, interdisciplinary work, or internships during the school year. Columbia’s name also carries broad prestige across many industries, which can matter if your interests might expand beyond straight software engineering.

If the question is only overall reputation in computer science, I would give the edge to UIUC. If the question becomes which degree opens more doors across fields beyond CS, or which experience is more appealing personally, Columbia becomes more compelling. But on the narrower CS question you asked, UIUC is very commonly regarded as the stronger name.
