Which is better for freshman admissions: University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or Ohio State?

I’m trying to narrow down my college list and keep seeing UIUC and Ohio State come up as strong public options. I know both are big schools, but I’m mainly trying to understand which one is generally a better choice if I’m applying as a freshman.

I’m looking for a simple comparison of how they stack up for undergraduate admissions and overall selectivity.

The biggest practical tradeoff is that UIUC is usually more competitive for certain direct-entry majors, while Ohio State is often a bit more flexible and accessible across a wider range of applicants. At UIUC, your chances can change a lot depending on the college or major, especially in areas like engineering, computer science, and business.

For undergraduate admissions, UIUC is typically viewed as the more selective option overall in the programs that drive a lot of applicant interest. It has a particularly strong national reputation in STEM and some other preprofessional fields, and that means applying to a high-demand major there can feel very different from applying to the university as a whole. If you are targeting one of UIUC’s most sought-after majors, the admissions bar is meaningfully higher.

Ohio State is still a strong and well-known public university, but from an admissions standpoint it is often a more straightforward bet for a broader set of students. It attracts a large applicant pool and has solid academics across many areas. For freshmen who want a major public university with strong resources but slightly less pressure at the point of admission, Ohio State often feels more attainable.

So if the question is which is “better” purely in terms of freshman admissions and selectivity, UIUC carries the stronger selective edge, especially in high-demand majors. If the question is which may give more applicants a realistic path to admission while still offering a major Big Ten experience, Ohio State often comes out ahead.
