Does UC Berkeley or Pomona College have a better small-campus feel?

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale: Pomona is built around a genuinely small, residential liberal arts campus, while UC Berkeley is a large public university where the day-to-day experience can feel much bigger, busier, and less contained. If your main priority is a close-knit, walkable, less overwhelming campus feel, Pomona fits that description much more clearly. Its campus is compact, most students live and spend time in the same immediate area, and the Claremont setting feels quieter and more self-contained than Berkeley.

Berkeley can still feel smaller within certain communities, especially through majors, residence halls, student organizations, and smaller upper-division classes. But the overall environment is still defined by a very large student body, a crowded urban edge, and a campus that has constant movement and intensity. Even if you find a smaller circle there, the surrounding atmosphere usually does not disappear.

Pomona also benefits from being part of the Claremont Colleges, which gives you access to more courses, events, and people without losing the feel of a small home campus. That setup is one reason students often experience Pomona as intimate without feeling isolated. You get the personal scale of a small college, but with more activity nearby than a standalone tiny campus might offer.

So on the specific question of small-campus feel, Pomona has the advantage by a wide margin. Berkeley may feel manageable once you find your routines and communities, but Pomona is far more likely to feel close, walkable, and calm from the start.
