Which is better for data science, UC Berkeley or University of Wisconsin-Madison?

I’m trying to decide between UC Berkeley and Wisconsin for data science, and I keep seeing both names come up a lot. I know they’re both strong schools overall, but I’m looking for a clearer sense of which one is generally considered better for data science as a major and career path.

I want to understand how they compare in terms of academic reputation and opportunities in the field.

For data science specifically, UC Berkeley is more often seen as the stronger name nationally, especially if you care about being in a place where data science, computer science, statistics, and industry recruiting are all deeply connected. For career path and reputation alone, Berkeley usually has the edge, especially for students aiming at top-tier tech, ML, analytics, or graduate study in closely related areas. But Wisconsin is not a fallback in any weak sense. It is better thought of as a different kind of strength: excellent training, major university resources, and very solid outcomes, especially for someone who will take initiative with research, internships, and advanced quantitative coursework.
