Brandeis or Boston University for public health: which is better for an undergraduate student?

Boston University is the stronger choice for undergraduate public health. BU has a dedicated School of Public Health with deep faculty expertise, a wide range of course offerings tied directly to the field, and clear access to Boston-area hospitals, research centers, and public health organizations. For an undergrad who already knows public health is the priority, BU usually offers the more developed academic and professional ecosystem.

One major difference is program infrastructure. At BU, public health sits inside a well-established professional school, which means undergraduates benefit from a denser concentration of relevant classes, researchers, events, and cross-registration possibilities connected to epidemiology, health policy, biostatistics, community health, and global health. Brandeis is strong academically, but it does not have the same scale or specialization in undergraduate public health.

Another differentiator is location in practice, not just on a map. BU’s urban campus places students close to major medical and public health institutions throughout Boston, and that matters for internships, research assistant roles, and exposure to real policy and healthcare settings during the school year. Brandeis is also near Boston, but BU students tend to have more immediate, built-in access to that network because of the university’s size and its public health footprint.

Brandeis can be excellent for students who want a smaller, more intimate liberal arts environment and may want to combine public health with broader social science or policy interests. But if the question is which school is more robust specifically for public health as an undergraduate field, BU has the clearer edge because the field is more fully built out there.
