Is the University of Virginia or Rutgers more prestigious for college admissions and jobs?

The biggest practical tradeoff is national brand versus regional scale: UVA tends to carry more prestige across the country, while Rutgers has very strong recognition in the Northeast and an enormous alumni footprint, especially in New Jersey and nearby job markets.

If someone asks purely, “Which school is considered more prestigious?” the answer is UVA. It has a longer-standing reputation as one of the most prominent public universities in the U.S. Rutgers is respected, but it is more often seen as a large, solid state university rather than a school with the same level of national prestige.

For jobs, the gap is real but often overstated. Employers usually care much more about your major, internships, grades, research, and communication skills than about a prestige difference between two legitimate public universities. Rutgers can be especially strong if you want access to New York City, New Jersey industries, pharma, finance-adjacent roles, or a huge alumni network in that region.
