That matters because CS students usually benefit from a deeper lineup of electives, more research labs, more student project teams, stronger ties to tech employers, and a larger alumni network in technical roles. If you want serious access to systems, AI, software engineering, cybersecurity, data, and other specialized areas, Virginia Tech is more likely to give you those options at scale.

Wake Forest’s advantage is the learning environment. Classes are often smaller, access to professors can feel more direct, and the overall undergraduate experience is more personal. For a student who wants close faculty attention and a liberal-arts-inflected college experience while still majoring in CS, that can be appealing. But when the question is strictly which school has the stronger CS program in classes, opportunities, and reputation, Wake Forest is usually not the one with the edge.

Employers and graduate programs will recognize both schools, but Virginia Tech carries more weight in computer science circles specifically. If computer science is your main priority and you expect to pursue it seriously, I would lean Virginia Tech. I’d choose Wake Forest only if you strongly prefer its smaller academic environment and broader campus style enough that you are willing to trade some CS depth and scale for that experience.
