The biggest practical tradeoff is contained campus life versus city-integrated social life. That means Harvard often feels easier for undergrads who want a built-in social structure, whereas Columbia offers more external options but sometimes a more fragmented day-to-day social rhythm.

At Harvard, a lot of undergraduate life runs through the Houses after first year, and that creates recurring dinners, events, formals, shared spaces, and friend networks that keep campus socially active even when academics are demanding. The campus also feels more self-contained, so it is easier to keep running into the same people and build casual friendships. In practice, that often makes social life feel more cohesive and more available without much planning.

Columbia absolutely has an active scene, but it works differently. You have student groups, campus events, and nearby neighborhoods in Manhattan, yet the social experience can feel more dispersed because students often split their time between campus and the city. Some undergrads love that freedom, but it can also make campus social life feel less unified than at a more residential school.

For going out, Columbia has the obvious advantage of being in New York, with far more off-campus options at any given time.
