Is MIT or Cornell better for undergraduate research opportunities?

I’m trying to compare colleges based on how easy it is to get involved in research as an undergrad. Both MIT and Cornell seem strong in STEM, but I’m not sure which one gives students more chances to join labs, do hands-on projects, and work with professors.

I’m mainly interested in the overall research environment, not a specific major.

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale versus concentration: Cornell offers a huge range of labs and disciplines because it is larger and spread across multiple colleges, while MIT has a more research-saturated environment where undergraduate involvement is built very directly into the school’s culture. At MIT, hands-on projects and lab work are woven into the undergraduate experience very early, and programs like UROP make research feel unusually accessible. At Cornell, the opportunities are extensive too, but navigating them can feel a bit more decentralized because of the university’s size and structure.

For pure ease of getting involved in research across STEM, MIT usually has the edge. Its undergraduate culture strongly normalizes joining a lab, reaching out to faculty, and doing project-based work outside class. MIT is also unusually dense with research activity relative to its undergraduate size, which means a lot of students are surrounded by labs and faculty work from the start.

Cornell is still excellent for undergraduate research, especially if you value breadth. Because it has strong engineering, arts and sciences, agriculture and life sciences, computing, and interdisciplinary institutes, there are many possible entry points. The advantage there is variety: you can find everything from fundamental science to applied engineering to field-based and industry-connected research. The tradeoff is that the system can require a little more initiative to map out, and access can vary more by department and lab.

In practice, MIT often feels more streamlined for an undergrad whose main goal is to jump into research quickly and make it a central part of college life. Cornell can absolutely match it in depth and may even exceed it in certain areas simply because of its scale, but the undergraduate research experience is less uniformly centralized.

So if the question is not about a specific major and is just which school more consistently makes undergraduate research feel close at hand, I would lean MIT.
