Harvey Mudd vs Pomona for computer science: which is better for undergraduates?

The biggest practical tradeoff is specialization versus breadth. Harvey Mudd is much more engineering-and-CS centered, so the curriculum, peer culture, and recruiting environment are intensely technical from the start. Pomona gives you a strong CS program too, but inside a broader liberal arts setting with more flexibility in how central computer science is to your college experience.

For undergraduate CS teaching, Harvey Mudd has the stronger reputation. CS is one of its signature areas, the department is a major part of campus identity, and undergrads are the clear priority because there are no graduate students competing for attention. The coursework is known for being rigorous and mathematically grounded, and Mudd students often benefit from a very technical peer group that pushes one another.

Pomona is also excellent for undergraduates, especially because you can take courses across the Claremont Colleges, including Harvey Mudd. That cross-registration piece matters a lot: a Pomona student can access substantial CS coursework beyond Pomona’s own department while still having Pomona’s broader humanities and social science strengths. In practice, that means more room to combine CS with another field and a campus culture that is less dominated by STEM.

The student experience is where the difference becomes clearest. Harvey Mudd tends to feel more intense, more workload-heavy, and more centered on problem sets, systems, and technical collaboration. Pomona usually offers a more balanced day-to-day environment, with strong academics but a wider mix of interests and personalities around you.

For pure undergraduate computer science, I would give Harvey Mudd the edge. If your main question is which school is stronger specifically for CS depth, technical culture, and undergrad-focused rigor, Mudd is hard to beat. Pomona becomes especially compelling when you want serious CS training without having your whole college life revolve around a narrowly technical atmosphere.
