Is Oxford or Cambridge considered more prestigious for undergraduates?

For undergraduates, Oxford and Cambridge are usually treated as essentially equal in prestige. In the UK and internationally, both are seen as top-tier universities with centuries-old reputations, intense admissions, and very strong academic outcomes. Most people do not think choosing one over the other gives you a clear blanket prestige boost.

Oxford tends to carry a slightly stronger public-profile aura in some circles because it is more visible in politics, philosophy, PPE, law, and media. If you are drawn to fields where public intellectual life, debate, and national leadership are especially associated with the university, Oxford can feel a bit more prominent in reputation, even though that does not mean it is categorically more respected.

Cambridge often has an especially powerful academic reputation in mathematics, natural sciences, engineering, and research-heavy subjects. For a student who wants to be surrounded by a culture that many people associate with deep technical and scientific strength, Cambridge can carry more weight in perception. In those areas, some people would actually place Cambridge a touch ahead.

For undergraduate applicants, the more meaningful difference is fit rather than prestige. The teaching style at both includes the college system and close academic supervision, but course structure, assessment style, and subject emphasis can differ in important ways. People who know UK higher education well usually judge the choice by subject, course design, and personal fit, not by assuming one name universally outranks the other.
