Is the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or NYU better for computer science?

UIUC is more widely regarded as the stronger computer science choice overall. Its CS program has an exceptional national reputation, a very deep technical course selection, and unusually strong recruiting pipelines with major tech employers.

One major difference is the CS department itself. At UIUC, computer science is a flagship strength of the university, with a long-established culture around systems, AI, theory, machine learning, computer architecture, and more. That usually translates into more depth in upper-level coursework, more classmates intensely focused on CS, and a stronger sense that the school is built to support high-volume, high-level computing education.

The second differentiator is employer recognition. UIUC is a frequent target for tech recruiting, especially for software engineering and quantitative roles. NYU absolutely places students into strong jobs too, especially with access to New York City internships.

A third factor is the academic environment around engineering. UIUC offers the more traditional big-engineering-campus experience, with extensive research infrastructure and a larger concentration of students across technical fields. NYU’s location creates advantages for startups, finance, and in-semester internships, but for pure CS program strength, depth, and reputation, UIUC has the clearer edge.
