Boston University vs UVA for finance: which is better for breaking into investment banking and other finance careers?
I’m trying to decide between Boston University and UVA and my main interest is finance, especially if I want a strong path into investment banking or similar careers.
Both schools seem respected, but I’m having trouble figuring out which one has the stronger reputation, recruiting, and alumni network for finance.

The biggest practical tradeoff is target-school access versus city location. UVA has the stronger on-campus pipeline for investment banking, especially through McIntire and its alumni network, while Boston University gives you direct access to Boston during the school year for internships and finance exposure. For pure Wall Street placement, UVA usually has the clearer edge; for students who want to build experience in Boston while in college, BU has a real advantage.
If investment banking is the main goal, UVA is typically viewed as the stronger option. McIntire has a very established reputation in finance, and UVA alumni are known for being especially active in banking recruiting. Firms that hire for IB and related roles tend to know exactly what UVA students are getting, and that matters when recruiting is structured and network-driven.
BU can absolutely place students into finance, including banking, asset management, and corporate finance, but the path is often less automatic and more self-directed. Questrom is well regarded, and being in Boston helps with semester internships, informational meetings, and exposure to financial employers. That said, Boston is a stronger market for asset management, consulting, and broader business roles than it is for matching UVA’s consistency into top-tier IB recruiting.
At BU, you are already in the business school path from the start, which can feel more straightforward operationally even if the ultimate recruiting ceiling for banking is a bit lower.
Between the two, I would lean UVA if your top priority is breaking into investment banking or high-end front-office finance. I would lean BU only if you strongly prefer being in Boston, want easier access to in-semester internships, or see yourself exploring finance beyond the narrow IB track rather than aiming at that pipeline above everything else.
