Is Brown or Duke better for a biology major?

Brown lets biology students shape their coursework through the Open Curriculum, which is great if you want room to explore neuroscience, public health, computer science, or the humanities alongside pre-med. Duke tends to feel more pre-professional and research-intensive from the start, with especially strong links to its medical school, hospital system, and large biomedical research enterprise.

For biology specifically, Duke is more often viewed as the stronger overall option, especially for students who want a clear pre-med or lab-research path. Its biology ecosystem benefits from the presence of Duke Health, major life sciences research, and a campus culture where undergraduate science research is very visible and accessible.

Brown is still excellent for biology, and some students prefer it precisely because it feels less rigid. The Open Curriculum can be a real advantage if you want to combine biology with policy, ethics, data science, or independent scholarly work without as many distribution requirements. Brown also has strong research opportunities through its own labs and affiliated medical institutions, but the overall feel is a bit less intensely pre-med than Duke’s.

If your question is which school is generally considered stronger for undergraduate biology alone, Duke has the edge.
