Is Caltech or Northwestern better for physics undergrad study?
I'm a high school senior trying to choose between Caltech and Northwestern, and I'm interested in physics as a possible major.
I know both are strong schools, but I'm trying to understand which one is generally better for an undergraduate physics student in terms of academics and research opportunities.

For undergraduate physics, Caltech is usually the more physics-centered environment. That matters if you want easier access to fields outside physics, a wider range of campus cultures, stronger preprofessional options, or more flexibility in case you end up combining physics with economics, journalism, music, or another area Northwestern does especially well.
Northwestern is also appealing if you want the resources of a large research university without the same level of constant technical intensity. You can still build a serious physics path there, including research and graduate-level preparation, but the social and academic environment is broader and often feels more balanced for students who do not want every conversation and every peer group to revolve around science.
So in pure undergraduate physics focus, Caltech stands out more. In overall flexibility and breadth while still keeping strong physics opportunities, Northwestern has the advantage.
