Is UNC or UVA more selective overall?

The biggest practical tradeoff is residency: both UNC and UVA are highly selective, but UNC is typically harder for out-of-state applicants because North Carolina law caps the share of out-of-state students in the incoming class.

For a general comparison, UVA is often viewed as slightly more selective in the broad national sense, but that headline can be misleading if you are applying from outside the state. For an in-state student, both are difficult and popular flagships. For an out-of-state student, UNC can feel tougher simply because there are fewer seats available to nonresidents.

Another reason this gets confusing is that “selective overall” can mean different things: academic profile of enrolled students, overall admit rate, or odds for a particular residency group. On academics and national applicant demand, the two schools are in a very similar tier. In actual admissions chances, residency matters so much that the answer can shift depending on whether you live in Virginia, North Carolina, or neither.

So the most accurate short answer is: they are both very selective, UVA may edge UNC in overall perceived selectivity, but UNC is often the tougher admit for out-of-state applicants because of its state-mandated enrollment limits.
