Which is better for internships, UNC or Georgetown?

The biggest practical tradeoff is location versus scale: Georgetown gives you direct access to internships during the semester because it sits in Washington, DC, while UNC offers a larger traditional campus environment with strong resources but usually requires more planning for off-campus opportunities. For internship access specifically, Georgetown has an edge because students can more easily work part-time in government, policy, nonprofits, consulting, media, and international affairs during the academic year. UNC absolutely places students into strong internships too, but those opportunities are more often concentrated in summers or tied to specific programs, research, and employer recruiting pipelines.

Georgetown’s alumni network is especially valuable in DC-facing fields. The school has deep connections in politics, public policy, global affairs, law-related work, think tanks, and adjacent sectors, and employers in those spaces are very used to hiring Georgetown students as interns while classes are in session. That creates a practical advantage because you can build experience earlier and more continuously, not just over one summer.

UNC has a very strong career ecosystem of its own, especially through business, media, healthcare, research, public health, and larger corporate recruiting. The alumni base is huge and loyal, and Chapel Hill students can access opportunities across the Research Triangle, which is a real strength. But the day-to-day internship culture is less built around quick Metro rides to offices after class and more around structured recruiting, summer internships, and regional networks.

If your definition of “better for internships” is easiest access, highest volume of in-semester opportunities, and strongest built-in employer proximity, Georgetown comes out ahead. If you value a broader campus experience and are comfortable being more deliberate about timing and geography, UNC is still excellent.
