Is UC Berkeley or Harvard better for business?

I’m a high school junior trying to figure out where to focus my applications, and I keep seeing both UC Berkeley and Harvard mentioned for business. I know they have very different reputations and paths into the field.

I’m mainly trying to understand which school is generally considered stronger for business opportunities and recruiting.

For undergraduate business specifically, UC Berkeley has the clearer and more direct path. Berkeley’s Haas School of Business is one of the most established undergraduate business programs in the country, and it is deeply connected to finance, consulting, tech, and entrepreneurship, especially in California. Harvard is outstanding for business-related careers too, but at the undergraduate level it does not have a traditional business major, so the route is less specialized.

Berkeley makes the most sense for a student who wants formal undergraduate business training. Haas offers dedicated coursework in areas like finance, accounting, marketing, and management, and Berkeley’s location gives students unusually strong access to startups, venture capital, and West Coast recruiting. If you already know you want business as an academic focus, Berkeley is often the more straightforward choice.

Harvard fits the student who wants maximum flexibility and brand reach rather than a defined business curriculum. Harvard undergraduates often study economics, applied math, statistics, or social sciences, then enter consulting, finance, entrepreneurship, or eventually business school. Recruiting is extremely strong, and the alumni network is hard to overstate, but you would be building a business path through adjacent fields rather than through an undergraduate business school.

For a student interested in tech, product, startups, or venture-backed entrepreneurship, Berkeley has a particularly strong ecosystem because of the Bay Area. For a student drawn to elite consulting, investing, broad leadership pipelines, and a liberal arts environment with business outcomes, Harvard carries enormous weight.

So if the question is which school is more directly built for undergraduate business, Berkeley has the edge. If the question is which school opens the widest set of top-tier career doors, including business, Harvard is arguably broader but less specialized.
