Around Vanderbilt, you have Midtown, Hillsboro Village, and student-heavy areas right by campus, so it is easier to feel the school spilling into nearby restaurants, apartments, and nightlife. Around Rice, you are next to the Museum District, the Texas Medical Center, and Hermann Park, which is a great location but not one that revolves around students in the same way.

For pure college-town feel, Vanderbilt usually comes closer. Nashville is still a large and fast-growing city, so Vanderbilt is not a classic small college town either, but the university has a stronger day-to-day presence in its immediate surroundings. Rice has one of the most distinct campus environments in the country because the residential college system creates a very tight internal community.
