Boston College vs Syracuse for economics: which is better for undergrad career outcomes?

I'm trying to decide between Boston College and Syracuse for economics and keep seeing both names come up in different discussions. I like economics because I’m interested in business and possibly consulting or finance later on.

I’m mostly trying to understand which school tends to give students stronger outcomes and opportunities for an economics major.

Boston College has the clearer edge for undergraduate economics career outcomes, especially if you are thinking about finance, consulting, or business-adjacent roles. Its location near Boston, stronger recruiting presence for those fields, and the reputation of both BC economics and the Carroll School ecosystem tend to create more direct access to internships and first jobs. Even for students majoring in economics rather than business, that network spillover matters a lot.

One big differentiator is employer access during the school year. Boston College students can more easily tap into internships, alumni coffee chats, and part-time experiences in Boston, which is a major hub for finance, consulting, asset management, and corporate roles. Syracuse has solid opportunities and an active alumni base, but it does not place students in as target-rich an environment during the academic year.

Another factor is the peer and recruiting ecosystem around economics. At BC, economics students often sit close to students aiming for banking, consulting, and corporate finance, and that creates stronger student organizations, interview prep culture, and referral networks. That kind of environment can materially improve outcomes because recruiting for those paths is structured and relationship-driven.

A third difference is brand perception in the Northeast job market. Boston College tends to carry more weight with employers in Boston and has strong recognition in New York and other East Coast markets. Syracuse is well known too, but for an economics student specifically targeting high-paying business-oriented outcomes, BC usually opens more doors more quickly.

Syracuse becomes more compelling if cost is meaningfully lower or if you strongly prefer its campus culture, but on career outcomes alone, Boston College is the safer bet for economics.
