Is NYU or Rutgers better for computer science?

The biggest practical tradeoff is prestige and location versus value and a more straightforward public-university path. NYU gives you direct access to New York City’s tech, finance, and startup scene, and its Courant Institute has a strong reputation in math and theoretical computer science. Rutgers tends to offer a stronger value proposition, a large and well-established CS department, and solid recruiting outcomes, especially in the Northeast.

For pure computer science strength, both are credible options, but they are strong in slightly different ways. NYU benefits from the visibility of the NYU name, its Manhattan setting, and the academic reputation tied to Courant, which matters most if you are drawn to more theoretical CS, applied math, or want to be in the city during the school year for internships. Rutgers has a respected CS program with broad course offerings and a large alumni base, and employers absolutely recognize it as a serious technical school.

For internships, NYU has the clear edge in convenience. Being in New York makes in-semester internships, networking events, and industry exposure easier to access without the same travel friction. Rutgers students still land strong internships, including at major tech companies, but it can require more intentional commuting, networking, and planning.

For employer perception, NYU’s brand is somewhat stronger nationally, while Rutgers is very well known and well regarded, especially in the Northeast and among employers familiar with public flagship universities. In CS hiring, though, your internships, projects, technical interview prep, and coursework usually matter more than a modest difference in school name.

If Rutgers is meaningfully cheaper, that changes the equation a lot, because Rutgers is strong enough in CS that graduating with less debt can easily be the smarter move.
