Is the University of Miami or the University of Pittsburgh better for a biology major?

The University of Pittsburgh is deeply connected to UPMC, and that gives biology students unusually strong exposure to biomedical research, hospitals, and faculty working across genetics, neuroscience, immunology, and related areas. If your picture of biology includes being surrounded by a big research university and medical campus from early on, Pitt has a real advantage.

It is also a particularly solid place for students aiming at med school or PhD pathways who are comfortable being proactive in a large university environment. There are many opportunities, but you usually need to seek them out, build relationships with professors, and navigate a bigger system. For a self-directed student, that can be a plus because the ceiling is high.

Miami fits students who want biology with more individual attention and a slightly more intimate academic feel. Its biology offerings are respected, and the university has meaningful strengths in marine biology, ecosystem science, and health sciences, with location-based advantages that are hard to replicate. If you are excited by coastal ecology, marine organisms, tropical fieldwork, or public health connections in South Florida, Miami can be especially compelling.

For pre-med, Miami can still prepare you well, but Pitt is often seen as having the more powerful biomedical infrastructure behind the biology experience. For grad school, either can work, and what will matter most is whether you get strong research involvement, good faculty recommendations, and advanced coursework.
