Is UC Berkeley or UC Davis better for an economics major?

I’m trying to decide between UC Berkeley and UC Davis for college, and economics is the main major I’m interested in. I know both are good schools, but I want to understand which one is generally considered stronger for economics in terms of the overall program and opportunities.

The biggest tradeoff is depth and access to high-powered economics opportunities versus a somewhat more relaxed, easier-to-navigate environment. For economics specifically, UC Berkeley is more widely seen as the stronger program because its department has a bigger national and international reputation, stronger ties to top research, and more proximity to finance, policy, and tech-related internships in the Bay Area. UC Davis still offers a solid economics education, but it does not carry the same weight in economics circles as Berkeley.

At Berkeley, the economics major benefits from a very established department, a wider range of advanced coursework, and a campus culture where research, quantitative work, and recruiting are especially intense. If you are thinking about PhD study, economic consulting, policy research, quantitative roles, or highly competitive finance paths, Berkeley tends to open more doors simply because of the department’s visibility and the employer and graduate-school attention it gets.

UC Davis is often appealing because the academic environment can feel less cutthroat and more manageable day to day. You can still get strong faculty access, good training in econometrics and applied economics, and useful opportunities through internships and campus involvement. For some students, that setting leads to better grades, closer mentoring, and less stress, which matters a lot if you want to thrive rather than just chase prestige.

If the question is which school is generally considered better for economics, the answer is UC Berkeley. Davis is a good option, but Berkeley is the one with the stronger overall economics reputation, broader high-end opportunities, and more upside for ambitious econ-related career paths.
