UNC vs Fordham for finance careers: which is better for recruiting and alumni network?

I’m trying to decide between UNC and Fordham and want to focus on finance recruiting after college. I know both are respected in different ways, but I’m mostly interested in which school tends to give students a better path into finance through recruiting opportunities and alumni connections.

I’m a high school senior and this decision feels pretty important because I want to make the strongest choice for a future finance career.

UNC has the edge for finance careers, especially if you want the broader national platform, stronger on-campus recruiting, and the reputation of Kenan-Flagler in corporate finance, investment banking, and consulting-adjacent roles. UNC’s business school is a major draw for employers, and larger firms routinely recruit there. Its alumni network is also very deep and spread across major finance hubs, not just one city.

One big differentiator is the business school itself. UNC’s Kenan-Flagler has a stronger brand in undergraduate business than Fordham’s Gabelli in most finance recruiting circles, and that matters when firms decide where to spend time and interview slots. At UNC, the combination of a flagship public university, a well-known undergrad business program, and a large student body creates more structured recruiting pipelines.

Another difference is geography versus reach. Fordham benefits a lot from being in New York City, which can help with internships during the school year, networking events, and proximity to firms. But Fordham’s finance access tends to rely more on students being proactive and leveraging the city, whereas UNC more often offers a built-in recruiting machine through campus channels, student organizations, and employer relationships.

The alumni piece also leans UNC, though Fordham’s network in New York is real and useful. UNC has a particularly loyal alumni base and a wider national footprint, which helps if your interests shift within finance or toward other business paths later. Fordham can be appealing if you are highly certain you want to stay in New York and are ready to hustle early for internships, but for pure recruiting strength and alumni reach in finance, UNC is the stronger pick.
