Is Arizona or Washington better for internships for college students?

The biggest practical tradeoff is volume versus accessibility: Washington tends to offer a deeper internship market overall, especially around Seattle, while Arizona can be easier to navigate and still has solid opportunities in a few key industries. In Washington, students are closer to major employers in tech, aerospace, healthcare, nonprofit work, and public policy. In Arizona, the strongest internship pipelines are often tied to Phoenix and Tempe, with growth in business, engineering, health, government, and some tech.

If you mean internship opportunities statewide for college students in general, Washington usually has the edge. Seattle creates a larger concentration of employers and a wider mix of internships during both the academic year and summer, which matters because in-semester internships are much easier when companies are nearby. That can be especially valuable if you want to build your resume steadily instead of relying only on one summer experience.

Arizona is not weak, though. ASU in particular has strong employer connections, and the Phoenix metro has become a meaningful hub for finance, healthcare, startups, semiconductors, and public-sector work. For some students, that setup can feel more manageable because the market is concentrated and schools may have strong local recruiting relationships.

The answer also depends a lot on your field. Washington is especially attractive for tech, computer science, engineering, policy, environmental work, and large corporate internships. Arizona can be very appealing for business, supply chain, engineering, healthcare, education, and certain government-related roles, especially if your college has close ties to the Phoenix area.

So if internship access is one of your top deciding factors and you are asking in broad terms, Washington is the safer bet. Arizona can still be excellent, but Washington usually offers more total options and more variety, particularly during the school year.
