University of Minnesota vs Purdue for finance careers: which is better for getting into finance?

I’m trying to decide between the University of Minnesota and Purdue, and I want to study finance or something similar. My main goal is to get a solid path into finance careers after college.

I know both schools are well known, but I’m not sure which one gives students a stronger advantage for recruiting, internships, and breaking into finance.

University of Minnesota has the clearer edge for finance careers, mainly because Carlson is more directly plugged into a major financial market and has a stronger reputation specifically in business recruiting. Being in Minneapolis matters: students are close to major employers in banking, corporate finance, asset management, and the Fortune 500 ecosystem in the Twin Cities, which makes in-semester networking and internships more realistic. Carlson is also a business school first, so the finance pipeline tends to feel more intentional.

Location is the biggest differentiator. Minneapolis gives Minnesota students access to firms and corporate headquarters during the school year, not just in the summer. That can translate into earlier internship experience, easier coffee chats, and more alumni events with finance professionals who are already nearby. For finance, proximity helps a lot because recruiting often depends on repeated contact and relationship-building.

The structure of the undergraduate business experience also favors Minnesota. Carlson is widely known for undergraduate business, and that visibility can help when employers target schools for finance-related recruiting. Students interested in corporate finance, commercial banking, treasury, consulting-adjacent finance roles, and some investment-oriented paths usually benefit from being in a college where business is a central identity rather than one strong option among many.

Purdue is an excellent university, but its strongest brand is more tied to engineering, quantitative fields, and technology-oriented recruiting. You can absolutely reach finance from Purdue, especially if you are interested in quantitative finance, analytics, operations-focused business roles, or finance within industrial and technical companies.

One practical nuance: if Purdue is significantly cheaper, that can change the equation, since finance outcomes depend heavily on grades, internships, and networking, not just school name.
