Is NYU worth it compared to Notre Dame for undergraduate students?

Notre Dame offers a more cohesive residential campus, a stronger sense of community and school identity, and an undergraduate experience built more intentionally around undergrads rather than the city itself. NYU’s biggest edge is access: being in New York creates exceptional internships, networking, and industry proximity, especially in business, arts, media, and some social science paths.

Notre Dame stands out because the day-to-day student experience is unusually unified. Its residential hall system is a real center of social life, traditions are strong, and students often describe the campus culture as close-knit and loyal. That matters for value because feeling connected to the institution often translates into better mentorship, easier involvement, and higher satisfaction with the undergraduate experience.

NYU’s main case is not the classic campus experience but the ability to plug directly into New York during college. For students who are self-directed, that can be enormously valuable: internships during the semester, access to employers, and exposure to industries that are harder to reach from a traditional campus. The catch is that NYU asks more independence from students, and some people find the social experience more fragmented because the university is woven into the city rather than centered on a contained campus.
