Boston University or University of Maryland: which is more fun for student life?

The biggest practical tradeoff is city-integrated life at Boston University versus traditional big-campus life at the University of Maryland. BU gives you Boston itself as part of the student experience, with restaurants, internships, concerts, and neighborhoods woven into daily life, but it can feel more spread out and less centered on one unified campus scene. Maryland tends to feel more socially concentrated, with a classic residential campus, Big Ten sports energy, and more of the day-to-day undergraduate social life happening in one place.

If by “fun” you mean a strong campus vibe where people gather around school traditions, athletics, and a visible student community, Maryland usually has the edge. College Park has a more conventional campus feel, and that often translates into tailgates, larger school-spirit moments, and easier spontaneous socializing in dorms, quads, and student spaces.

BU can absolutely be fun, but the fun is different. It often comes from living in Boston, exploring the city, joining clubs, going off campus, and building your own version of college life rather than plugging into one dominant campus culture. Some students love that independence, while others find it less cohesive socially than a place where most undergrads are orbiting the same campus hub.

Day to day, Maryland is more likely to feel overtly social in a traditional undergraduate way. BU can feel busier, more independent, and a little more dispersed because students are balancing campus life with everything the city offers.

If your question is specifically which school feels more social and enjoyable for the average undergrad on a daily basis, I’d give the nod to the University of Maryland.
