Princeton vs WashU for undergraduate research: which is better?

I’m trying to decide between Princeton and WashU, and one of the biggest things for me is undergrad research. I’m interested in doing real research as an undergraduate, not just class projects, and I want to know which school tends to give students better access to labs, faculty mentorship, and meaningful research opportunities.

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: Princeton offers unusually strong faculty access and a culture where independent scholarship is built into the undergraduate experience, while WashU often gives students a very large, active research ecosystem with especially strong opportunities tied to its medical school and life sciences. Princeton is still excellent for STEM research, but its strength is often the combination of depth, mentorship, and the expectation that undergraduates will eventually produce substantial independent work. WashU may feel more expansive; Princeton may feel more personal. Those are different advantages, not just different vibes.

If undergraduate research is your top priority across the board, I would give Princeton the edge for mentorship and for how centrally research is woven into the undergraduate academic experience. I would lean toward WashU specifically if your interests are strongly tied to medicine, neuroscience, bio, or large lab-based research where the size of the research enterprise could open more doors.
