Is MIT worth choosing over Carnegie Mellon for computer science and engineering?

I’m trying to decide between MIT and Carnegie Mellon for computer science and engineering, and both seem like amazing options.

Since I can only pick one, I’m wondering whether MIT is actually worth it over CMU for the overall experience, reputation, and career opportunities.

Yes, MIT can be worth choosing over Carnegie Mellon for computer science and engineering, but mostly if you want a broader engineering culture, more flexibility across fields, and a campus environment where CS is part of a larger science-and-tech ecosystem. If you are interested in moving between CS, electrical engineering, robotics, math, physics, economics, entrepreneurship, or design, MIT makes that kind of mixing especially natural. The culture also leans heavily toward hands-on building, undergraduate research, and startup activity, so students who want a big-picture engineering environment often find MIT uniquely energizing.

Carnegie Mellon makes a lot of sense for the student who already knows they want an intensely focused, highly rigorous CS experience and likes a department-centric environment. CMU’s School of Computer Science has a distinct identity and is deeply respected by employers and graduate programs. For some students, that concentrated strength can feel more direct and professionally aligned than MIT’s broader ecosystem.

On career outcomes, neither school will limit you. Top employers recruit heavily at both, and both can lead to elite grad programs, major tech companies, quantitative roles, robotics, systems, and startups. MIT may carry a little more universal brand power across different sectors and internationally, while CMU is especially revered in computer science circles, so the practical gap is usually smaller than people assume.

For overall experience, the difference is more about atmosphere than prestige. MIT often appeals to students who want a collaborative but intense campus with lots of cross-campus innovation and a somewhat more varied academic identity. CMU often appeals to students who are comfortable with a more specialized, high-intensity academic culture where computer science is central to the school’s reputation.

If cost is similar, I would lean MIT for a student deciding between computer science and engineering rather than only computer science. If CMU is significantly cheaper, or if you strongly prefer its more focused CS culture, that can easily outweigh the marginal advantages MIT may have in breadth and brand.
