Brown or BU: which is better for city life?

BU is the clearer pick for city life. Its campus runs right through Boston along Commonwealth Avenue, the Green Line stops on campus, and daily student life is tightly woven into the city rather than separated from it. At Brown, you are in Providence, but the feel is more campus-centered and neighborhood-based than fully urban in the Boston sense.

The biggest difference is physical integration with the city. At BU, you step outside and you are already in Boston: cafes, stores, apartments, internships, concerts, and public transit are part of the normal rhythm of the school day. Brown sits on College Hill, which is attractive and walkable, but it feels more like a distinct university neighborhood overlooking the city than a campus embedded directly in the middle of it.

Transit and ease of exploring also favor BU. Boston’s T is built into the student experience there, so getting to different neighborhoods, museums, internships, Fenway, Back Bay, or the waterfront is straightforward without needing a car. Providence is easy to navigate and has good food and arts for its size, but it offers a smaller-scale city experience and fewer distinct areas to explore on a regular basis.

The social atmosphere follows from that layout. BU students often treat the city itself as an extension of campus, and that makes off-campus life feel immediate and constant. Brown students absolutely use Providence, especially for restaurants, downtown spots, and local events, but the center of gravity is more often the Brown community and the College Hill area.
