Which has better undergraduate research opportunities, UCLA or UC Berkeley?

The biggest practical tradeoff is access versus scale: UC Berkeley has an even more intensely research-driven culture across many departments, while UCLA can feel a bit more navigable for undergrads trying to actually join a lab early. Both schools offer real undergraduate research opportunities, including faculty labs, departmental programs, and funded summer research, but the day-to-day experience can differ depending on how competitive your field is and how proactive you are.

Berkeley has enormous research breadth and a very strong reputation for undergraduate involvement, especially in STEM and the social sciences. There are many formal entry points, including URAP, which is specifically designed to connect undergraduates with faculty research projects. In practice, though, Berkeley can feel more crowded and self-directed, so students often need to email widely, follow up, and be comfortable navigating a very large academic environment.

UCLA also has extensive research activity and strong support structures for undergrads. Programs through the Undergraduate Research Center, along with departmental advising and faculty labs, make it possible to get involved relatively early, including in humanities and social sciences as well as STEM. Many students find UCLA slightly easier to navigate institutionally, which can matter if your goal is not just having research on paper but actually finding a mentor and staying involved.

If the question is where an individual undergraduate may find the process a bit more manageable and supportive, UCLA is very compelling. For most students, this is close enough that your intended major should break the tie, since some departments at Berkeley clearly outpace UCLA and vice versa.
