Which is a better fit for an open curriculum: University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or Brown?

Brown is much more aligned with what most students mean by an open curriculum. Brown does not have general education requirements in the usual sense, so students have unusually broad freedom to choose courses across departments before settling into a concentration. UIUC, by contrast, is a large public research university where requirements are usually shaped much more by your college and major, so the experience is flexible in some places but not built around an open-curriculum philosophy.

Brown tends to fit a student who wants exploration to be the default. If you like the idea of sampling classes in very different fields without worrying much about a core curriculum, Brown is designed for that. Its academic culture is known for encouraging self-direction, and students often have substantial room to build an interdisciplinary path early on.

UIUC fits better for someone who wants options inside a more defined academic structure. There are many majors, strong departments, and chances to take courses across fields, but your freedom depends a lot on where you are enrolled. Some programs, especially in engineering or other sequenced majors, can be quite structured, which makes broad exploration harder unless you plan carefully from the start.

For a student who is undecided and wants to discover interests through coursework itself, Brown usually feels far more open day to day. At UIUC, exploration is possible, but it often happens within distribution requirements, college rules, prerequisite chains, and major-specific expectations.
