University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign vs NYU for finance careers: which is better?
I'm trying to decide between University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and NYU, and my main goal is getting into finance after college. Both seem strong in different ways, but I’m not sure which one gives a better overall path for recruiting, internships, and building a resume for finance jobs.
I’m a high school senior trying to make a practical choice, so I’m mainly looking at which school is better for breaking into finance careers.

The biggest practical tradeoff is direct access versus cost and campus experience: NYU puts you in Manhattan with year-round proximity to banks, buy-side firms, and networking events, while UIUC can be much less expensive and still places well into finance, especially if you take full advantage of its business ecosystem. For pure recruiting convenience, NYU has the edge because students can intern during the semester and attend a huge volume of employer events without leaving the city. UIUC is not shut out at all, but you usually have to be more intentional about building the same level of exposure.
If your goal is high-finance recruiting, especially investment banking, sales and trading, or similar front-office paths, NYU is typically the cleaner route. Stern has a very visible pipeline into finance, and being in New York matters because informational interviews, coffee chats, and part-time internships are much easier to stack into your schedule.
UIUC is still a very credible option, particularly through Gies and finance-related student organizations, but the path can feel more self-driven. Students do land strong roles, including in Chicago finance, corporate finance, consulting, and some New York opportunities, yet the volume and immediacy of finance recruiting is not the same as being based in Manhattan. The upside is that UIUC can offer a stronger value proposition if the price difference is significant.
For resume-building, NYU gives you more opportunities during the academic year. UIUC can absolutely get you there, but summer internships, student leadership, technical prep, and aggressive networking matter more because you are not surrounded by the industry every day.
If the cost is remotely comparable and finance is your clear priority, I’d pick NYU. If UIUC is dramatically cheaper, it becomes a very serious contender, because avoiding heavy debt matters a lot in finance and UIUC is strong enough that a motivated student can still build an excellent outcome.
