Is University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign worth it compared with Ohio State for college students?

The biggest practical tradeoff is academic edge versus flexibility and cost. UIUC has a clearer national advantage in a few high-demand areas, especially engineering, computer science, and some quantitative fields, while Ohio State offers a similarly large-school experience with broad academics, major athletics energy, and often a more manageable overall path for students who are not choosing one of UIUC’s standout programs. Both have huge campuses, active student life, and alumni networks that can open doors, so the real question is whether UIUC’s specific strengths line up with what you want to study.

UIUC tends to feel most worth it when you are entering a program where its reputation carries unusual weight. In engineering, CS, and related technical areas, the school’s employer visibility, research infrastructure, and recruiting depth are a real advantage, not just a branding difference. For students in those fields, that can translate into stronger internship pipelines and a network that is especially useful early in a career.

If you are looking at business, sciences, social sciences, or are still somewhat undecided, the gap is smaller. Ohio State is also a major research university with extensive campus resources, a huge student community, and strong national recognition. For many students, the day-to-day experience at Ohio State can be just as rewarding, and the long-term outcome may depend more on internships, grades, and involvement than on choosing UIUC.

The financial side matters a lot here. If UIUC is significantly more expensive, it is usually only clearly worth stretching for if you are in one of its especially strong programs or have a very specific reason to want its academic environment.
