University of Washington vs UC Irvine for business: which is better for an undergraduate business degree?

The biggest practical tradeoff is direct business-school strength versus flexibility of entry. At Washington, the Foster School of Business has the stronger national reputation and deeper employer presence in Seattle, but admission to business can be more complicated depending on whether you were admitted directly. At UC Irvine, Merage is solid and well respected, especially in Southern California, but it does not usually carry the same overall weight for undergraduate business recruiting as Foster.

For business education alone, UW has the edge. Foster is especially well regarded in accounting, finance, information systems, and consulting pathways, and students benefit from strong ties to Seattle-area employers as well as large companies with a big presence there, including tech and retail firms that hire business interns. The UW brand is also broader and more established in business circles nationally.

UC Irvine still offers a very good undergraduate experience, and being in Orange County helps with access to internships in nearby business hubs like Irvine, Costa Mesa, and parts of LA. Merage can be a strong choice for students interested in business analytics, entrepreneurship, and careers rooted in Southern California. The campus environment is also often seen as more structured and less competitive than UW’s business-entry process.

One important detail is that at UW, getting into the university is not always the same as being securely in Foster unless you have direct admission, so that risk matters. If you already have direct admission to Foster, I would pick UW over UC Irvine for undergraduate business because the program is more established and typically gives you stronger recruiting reach. If your UW path to business is uncertain but you have a clearer route at UC Irvine, that can narrow the gap a lot.
