University of Washington vs UCLA for business: which is better for an undergraduate business major?
I’m trying to narrow down my college list and both of these schools are on it. I know they’re strong overall, but I’m mainly interested in business as an undergraduate and want to compare them from that angle.
I’m looking at the general reputation of the business program, not just the school name, and I’m trying to understand which one tends to be stronger for a student who wants a solid business education.

The biggest practical tradeoff is certainty versus access. UCLA gives you a highly respected university name and strong recruiting in a major market, but its undergraduate business path is less direct because UCLA does not have a traditional standalone undergrad business major like many business schools. The University of Washington, by contrast, has the Foster School of Business, which is a true undergraduate business school with clearer business-focused coursework, majors, and recruiting built around undergrads.
If you are specifically asking about undergraduate business, Washington usually has the cleaner and stronger setup. Foster is well known on the West Coast, especially in accounting, finance, consulting, and connections to Seattle-area employers like Amazon, Microsoft, and major regional firms. Students who want a straightforward business education often find UW easier to evaluate because the program structure is explicit and business-centered from the start.
UCLA is excellent overall and very strong for economics, business economics, math/econ, and adjacent paths, but that is not quite the same thing as attending an undergraduate business school. For some students, that distinction matters a lot. If you want classes, advising, student organizations, and recruiting that are all tightly organized around business majors, UW has the advantage.
UCLA still has real strengths: broader national prestige, a huge alumni network, and access to Los Angeles internships across entertainment, finance, startups, and real estate. A student who is flexible about majoring in something adjacent to business and is comfortable piecing together a business-oriented path can do extremely well there.
So if the comparison is truly business program versus business program, I would give the edge to the University of Washington. UW Foster is usually the more purpose-built undergraduate business experience.
