The biggest practical tradeoff is that UChicago tends to reward a very distinctive academic and intellectual presentation, while Northwestern more often looks like a high-selective-school version of a balanced applicant pool with many different entry points. For a strong but not perfect student, both are reaches, but UChicago can feel a little more unpredictable because fit in the application matters so much, especially in the essays. Northwestern is still extremely hard to get into, but the path can look slightly more legible if your academics, activities, and school fit are consistently strong.

At UChicago, the supplemental writing is a major part of the file. The school is famous for unusual prompts and tends to respond well to applicants who come across as deeply curious, specific, and excited by ideas for their own sake, not just polished and high-achieving. A student with a few imperfections can still be very compelling there if the application has a clear intellectual voice.

Northwestern usually feels a bit less quirky in what it asks students to show. It values strong academics too, but it also has lots of distinct academic and extracurricular lanes, from journalism and engineering to theater, music, and communications, so applicants can make a strong case through focused involvement and a believable reason for wanting Northwestern specifically. In practice, that can make it easier for some students to understand how to position themselves.

So if your profile is strong but not flawless, I would think of both as real reaches, with UChicago often being the more volatile outcome and Northwestern sometimes being the slightly more straightforward read. That does not mean Northwestern is easy or that UChicago only takes perfect academic eccentrics. It means UChicago is especially sensitive to how convincingly your application feels like a match for its academic culture, while Northwestern may give a bit more room for a well-rounded but still clearly directed applicant.

If forced to compare admissions odds in practical terms, I would usually call them similarly difficult, but I would trust Northwestern a little more as a place where a strong applicant can predict how their file will land. UChicago is the one where an unusually sharp essay package can help more, and where a student who looks excellent on paper can still be harder to read.
