BU’s College of Communication is one of the school’s signature units, with clear pathways in fields like media, journalism, advertising, public relations, film, and communication research. UC Irvine has solid related options, but it is not as nationally defined by communications in the same way BU is.

For the program itself, BU usually has the edge for a student who specifically wants communications. Its communications school is large, visible, and closely tied to internships, student media, production, and professional networking in Boston. That matters because communications is one of those majors where the surrounding ecosystem, alumni connections, and hands-on opportunities can shape your college experience as much as the classroom.

UC Irvine is still appealing, especially if you want a broader social sciences or media studies angle in a strong public research university environment. Being in Orange County also gives you proximity to Los Angeles and Southern California media spaces, which can be valuable. But compared with BU, Irvine tends to feel less like a place built around communications as a flagship academic identity.

Fit also depends on what kind of communications student you are. If you want a more pre-professional setup, frequent industry exposure, and a college experience closely linked to media and communication careers, BU is the more compelling choice. If cost is significantly lower at Irvine, or if you prefer the UC environment and want flexibility to explore communication through adjacent departments, Irvine becomes more attractive.

Taken just on communications strength and fit for that major, Boston University is the better bet. UC Irvine is a good option, but BU is the one more likely to feel purpose-built for what you want to study.
