Is Northeastern or UMass Amherst more fun for undergrad students?

UMass Amherst usually has the more active traditional undergraduate social scene. It has a true college-town feel in Amherst, a large residential campus, major school-spirit events, and a weekend culture built around being on campus rather than dispersing into a city. Northeastern absolutely offers plenty to do, but the social experience is shaped more by Boston itself, co-op schedules, and a student body that can feel more spread out.

One big difference is setting. UMass Amherst is in a classic campus environment where a lot of students live nearby and stay plugged into campus life on weekends, so parties, club events, dining halls, and sports all feed into the same social rhythm. Northeastern is in the middle of Boston, which means concerts, restaurants, internships, and off-campus outings are everywhere, but it can also make student life feel less centralized.

Another differentiator is the weekend atmosphere. At UMass, weekends tend to feel distinctly collegiate, with more of the student body around and more social energy concentrated in one place. At Northeastern, some students go home, some are on co-op, some are focused on internships or city plans, so there is activity, but it is often less unified.

Housing and campus identity matter too. UMass has the advantage if you want the sense that the whole school is living one shared undergrad experience, especially early on. Northeastern can be very fun for students who like independence and want their social life to include the city as much as the campus.

So if by fun you mean the more obvious, built-in undergrad social scene where people are around and doing things together on weekends, UMass Amherst has the edge.
