Which school is harder to get into, Northeastern or Northwestern?

I keep seeing both schools mentioned a lot when people talk about highly selective colleges, and their names are easy to mix up. I’m trying to understand which one is generally considered harder to get into so I can better gauge how competitive each application would be.

Northwestern is harder to get into than Northeastern. In current admissions conversations, Northwestern is viewed as one of the most selective private research universities in the country, while Northeastern is also highly selective but sits a step below that level. Applicants usually treat Northwestern as a much bigger reach.

One concrete difference is applicant profile and institutional reputation. Northwestern draws a very deep pool of top academic applicants across the country and internationally, and it has especially strong pull in fields like journalism, engineering, theater, and economics. That broader national prestige tends to make the admissions bar tougher overall.

Another differentiator is how each school fits into application strategy. Northeastern can be unpredictable because it gets a huge volume of applications and manages enrollment through multiple entry pathways and decision rounds, so it may feel hard in a different way. But unpredictability is not the same as being more selective than Northwestern.

It also helps to separate name confusion from admissions reality. Despite the similar names, Northwestern is typically grouped with a more rarefied tier of universities, whereas Northeastern is better understood as a very competitive school that has risen sharply in selectivity over time. So if you are gauging difficulty, Northwestern should be treated as the tougher admit, and Northeastern as selective but more attainable by comparison.
