Is Notre Dame or Penn more prestigious?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Penn has a broader national and professional “elite university” brand, while Notre Dame has an unusually loyal, recognizable reputation that can carry a lot of weight in certain circles, especially alumni-driven ones. In most general conversations about top universities, Penn is more often placed in that highest-prestige group because it is an Ivy, has very strong graduate and professional schools, and is especially visible in business, finance, consulting, medicine, and academia. Notre Dame is still highly respected nationally, but its reputation tends to be talked about a little differently: more undergraduate-focused, values-driven, and powered by a famously engaged alumni network.

For employers, Penn usually has the stronger pure prestige signal across more industries, particularly on the East Coast and in fields where brand sorting matters early. Wharton also gives Penn an extra layer of name recognition that spills over into how many people view the university as a whole. Notre Dame can be extremely powerful with employers too, especially where its alumni base is active and where the school’s culture of loyalty and leadership is well known.

For grad schools and academic circles, Penn also tends to have the edge in broad institutional prestige because of its research profile and the strength of its graduate programs across multiple disciplines. Notre Dame is very well regarded, but it is less likely to be invoked in the same shorthand way people use for places that dominate both undergraduate and graduate prestige conversations.

If the question is strictly “which is more prestigious overall,” Penn is the clearer answer. Notre Dame is still a major national name and can feel just as powerful in some networks, but in the broadest employer, grad school, and top-university perception sense, Penn usually comes out ahead.
