Arizona State or UCLA for social life?

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale and style: Arizona State tends to offer a more visibly social, high-energy campus scene centered around a large student body, school spirit, and easy access to parties, while UCLA’s social life is active but more distributed across clubs, dorm communities, Westwood, and the broader Los Angeles area. At ASU, the social scene is usually easier to plug into quickly because Tempe is so built around the university. At UCLA, there is plenty to do, but it can take more initiative to find your people since the campus culture is less dominated by one single social mode.

For meeting people fast, ASU has an edge. The campus is very large, lively, and socially open, and Tempe’s setup makes it easy for student life to spill off campus into restaurants, bars, events, and apartment gatherings. If what you want is a place where the weekend atmosphere feels obvious and accessible, ASU often delivers that more naturally.

UCLA has a strong social environment too, just in a different form. Residential life is a major plus, and many students build tight communities through the Hill, student organizations, performances, athletics, and outings around LA. The upside is variety: your social life can include campus events one night and a concert, beach trip, or neighborhood hangout another. The downside is that LA can feel spread out, and UCLA’s student culture can seem busier and a bit less instantly inclusive unless you actively join things.

If social life is your top priority in the sense of wanting an easy, energetic, low-friction college scene, ASU probably has the advantage. If you want a social life that is still very active but somewhat more layered, with strong campus communities plus access to a huge city, UCLA is the more interesting option. Purely on social ease and day-to-day vibe, I’d give ASU the nod.
