Arizona State vs UPenn for finance careers: which one gives better career outcomes?
I’m trying to decide between Arizona State and UPenn because I want to go into finance after college. ASU seems more affordable and I’d probably have a stronger GPA there, but UPenn has a much bigger reputation for banking and finance.
For someone focused on finance careers, how much of a difference does the school name actually make compared with grades, internships, and networking?

For finance careers, UPenn creates a meaningfully different set of opportunities, especially if you are aiming at investment banking, buy-side roles, elite finance internships, or jobs in New York and other major financial hubs. ASU can still lead to solid finance outcomes, but you will usually need to be more self-directed about networking, internships, and breaking into the most selective parts of the industry.
UPenn fits the student who wants to be surrounded by heavy finance recruiting from the start and is ready to take advantage of a very dense alumni network. In finance, school name is not everything, but it can determine whether the door is already open a crack or whether you have to force it open yourself.
ASU fits the student who is cost-conscious, entrepreneurial, and comfortable building their own path. If the price gap is large enough that UPenn would require major debt, that changes the equation. In finance, graduating with less debt can matter a lot, especially if your first role is in corporate finance, commercial banking, wealth management, or a regional firm rather than a top-paying Wall Street job.
Grades, internships, and networking absolutely matter at both schools, but they do not matter in exactly the same way. A strong GPA from ASU helps, but it usually does not erase the recruiting advantage Penn offers for top-tier finance tracks. At ASU, high grades and internships are more likely to be the minimum foundation, and networking becomes the real lever for accessing selective opportunities.
If your goal is high-finance recruiting and UPenn is financially realistic, Penn gives better career outcomes by a noticeable margin. If ASU would leave you with far less debt and you are open to a wider range of finance paths, ASU can still be a smart choice, but it will require more hustle and a less automatic pipeline.
