Is Arizona State University or Cornell better for engineering?

Cornell is the stronger engineering school overall. Its College of Engineering has a much more established national reputation, deeper research intensity, and broader name recognition with major employers, especially in competitive sectors like tech, quantitative fields, and high-end graduate study. For internships and first-job recruiting, that reputation tends to open more doors automatically, even though individual results still depend on what you do there.

Another difference is the academic environment around engineering itself. Cornell offers a very research-heavy setting with strong faculty depth across many engineering disciplines, plus close ties to high-level labs, project teams, and interdisciplinary work. That can translate into more advanced coursework options, more specialized mentoring, and stronger preparation if you might want a master’s or PhD later.

ASU is still a legitimate engineering option, not a weak one. It has scale, solid industry connections, and a practical, accessible approach that can work very well for students who are proactive. In some regional markets, especially in the Southwest, ASU can place students effectively, and a high-performing ASU student can absolutely land excellent jobs.

But if the question is which school is more widely considered better for engineering and whose reputation is more likely to matter later, the answer is Cornell. The main caveat is cost: if ASU is dramatically cheaper, that can be a very serious reason to choose it, because engineering outcomes depend heavily on debt load as well as prestige.
