Arizona State vs Syracuse for communications: which is better for a communications major?

I’m trying to choose between Arizona State and Syracuse for communications, and I want to make the most practical choice for my major. Both schools seem strong, but I’m not sure how they compare in terms of communications program quality and overall reputation.

I’m mostly looking for a school that would give me a solid foundation and good opportunities in the field.

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale and cost versus industry prestige and a more specialized communications ecosystem. Arizona State gives you a huge university, broad opportunities, and often a more affordable path, while Syracuse offers a communications-focused identity that is especially well known because of the Newhouse School. For this major specifically, Syracuse tends to carry more immediate name recognition in media, journalism, PR, advertising, and related communication fields.

If by “communications” you mean a career tied to media industries, Syracuse has a real edge. The S.I. Newhouse School is one of the most established and visible schools in the country for communications-related study, and employers in broadcasting, journalism, public relations, advertising, and digital media know it well. That reputation can matter when you are applying for internships, building alumni connections, and trying to enter competitive communication fields.

Arizona State is still a strong option, especially if you want flexibility or are not yet locked into one communications path. ASU is large, well resourced, and has strong internship access in a major metro area through Phoenix. It can be a smart choice for students interested in communications combined with business, marketing, digital content, public service, or interdisciplinary work, especially if the cost difference is significant.

In terms of overall reputation for the major alone, Syracuse is more likely to impress people immediately in communications circles. ASU’s strength is more about opportunity through size, variety, and practical experience than about having the same level of brand power in communications specifically.

So if the question is strictly which school is better for a communications major, Syracuse is the stronger pick. ASU becomes the more practical choice only if it is meaningfully cheaper, offers a better personal fit, or lines up better with the specific branch of communications you want to pursue.
