Is Arizona State University or the University of Maryland better for finance?

I’m trying to narrow down my college list and both ASU and Maryland seem like solid options for finance. I know fit matters too, but I’m mainly trying to understand which school tends to be viewed as stronger for a finance major and recruiting opportunities. I’m asking from the perspective of an incoming high school senior choosing between the two.

The University of Maryland has the stronger overall edge for finance. Its Smith School of Business carries a more nationally established reputation in business, and its location near Washington, DC gives students easier access to internships during the school year in finance, consulting, policy, and corporate roles. For a high school senior focused mainly on finance recruiting and brand strength, Maryland is typically the more advantageous pick.

One big differentiator is employer access. Maryland students can tap into opportunities not just in College Park, but across DC, Northern Virginia, and nearby major East Coast cities, which matters because finance recruiting often depends on frequent networking, alumni connections, and in-semester internships. That geographic position tends to create a denser pipeline for internships and professional exposure while you are still in school.

Another is how the business program is perceived. Smith is widely respected and tends to have stronger visibility with recruiters in business fields, including finance. ASU’s W. P. Carey School of Business is absolutely legitimate and well regarded, especially for scale, resources, and strong career services, but Maryland usually gets the nod when students are comparing pure finance prestige and East Coast recruiting reach.

The third factor is the kind of finance path you want. If you are interested in corporate finance, financial analysis, consulting-adjacent roles, or internships tied to government and regulatory institutions, Maryland’s ecosystem is especially useful. ASU can still be a very smart option, particularly if cost is much lower or if you want to build a career in the Southwest, but in a direct head-to-head on finance strength and recruiting opportunities, Maryland comes out ahead.
