Arizona State or Iowa State for pre-law: which is better overall?

Arizona State is the stronger overall pick for pre-law. ASU gives you a clearer law-related ecosystem through Arizona State University’s Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law, a wider set of policy and government-adjacent opportunities in the Phoenix area, and more built-in access to internships during the school year. For someone already thinking ahead to law school, those advantages are more directly useful than what Iowa State typically offers.

The biggest differentiator is proximity to legal and public-service experience. ASU students are in a major metro area with courts, law firms, nonprofits, government offices, and the state capital within reach, which makes semester internships and job-shadowing much more realistic. That matters because pre-law preparation is often less about a formal track and more about building strong writing, research, leadership, and service experience over time.

ASU also has a more visible pre-law infrastructure. Having an actual law school on campus tends to create more relevant programming, speaker events, advising connections, and chances to meet current law students or faculty. Even if you never take a law class, being in that environment can make it easier to test your interest and understand what law school actually involves.

Iowa State is a solid university, but it is better known for strengths outside the traditional pre-law and policy pipeline. You can absolutely get to law school from Iowa State, especially if you earn excellent grades and use campus opportunities well, but the surrounding environment is not as naturally geared toward legal exposure. For a student choosing between the two with law school already in mind, ASU offers a more practical runway.
