University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign vs NYU for accounting: which is better for accounting careers?
I’m a high school senior trying to decide between University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and NYU for accounting. Both seem like strong options, but I’m mostly focused on which one is better for building a solid accounting career.
I want to understand which school has the stronger reputation, recruiting, and overall path into accounting jobs after graduation.

For accounting specifically, UIUC has the edge for most students who want the clearest, most established path into the profession. Its Gies College of Business is especially well known in accounting, and it has long-standing recruiting ties with major public accounting firms, corporate employers, and graduate accounting pathways. If your goal is a traditional accounting career with strong placement and a very recognizable accounting brand, UIUC is hard to beat.
UIUC tends to fit the student who wants a campus where accounting is a flagship strength rather than just one strong option among many. The accounting curriculum is deeply built out, recruiters know the program well, and there is a large pipeline into audit, tax, advisory, and corporate accounting roles. It is also the kind of place where being an accounting major is common and well supported, which matters if you want classmates, clubs, faculty, and recruiting infrastructure all centered around that field.
NYU makes more sense for the student who wants accounting in a more finance-heavy, New York City-centered environment. Stern has excellent employer access and the location creates real advantages for networking, internships during the school year, and exposure to accounting-adjacent paths like financial services, valuation, consulting, and transaction-related work. If you suspect you may want to blend accounting with finance or pivot toward Wall Street-facing roles, NYU can open doors in a different way.
In terms of pure accounting reputation, though, UIUC is the name I would trust more. Among employers in accounting, it has an unusually strong identity in that discipline itself, not just overall business prestige. NYU is highly respected, but its brand is often felt most strongly through finance and the broader New York business ecosystem rather than accounting alone.
For recruiting, both can get you to major firms, including Big Four, but UIUC is especially dependable as an accounting feeder. NYU offers access and proximity; UIUC offers depth and volume in accounting-specific recruiting. If cost is even remotely comparable, I would lean UIUC for someone focused mainly on accounting careers rather than a wider business path.
